The Beijing Olympic Games kick off at 8.08pm on the 8th day of the 8th month in the year 2008. In keeping with a tradition of Thames rowers at the Olympics there will be three representatives in British boats this year: Ali Knowles, Beth Rodford and Elise Laverick.

Lots of Thames crews were racing last weekend at Kingston regatta and we came away with two wins and lots of finalists. Harry Dorrance-King won in novice singles and the WS4 8+ won (beating CUWBC) as well. Congratulations!
Some very exciting racing in truly horrible conditions. Notably a very disappointing result for the Lea Wyfold crew who were in the lead against London on Saturday before running into the booms twice to give London the space to get past and win. Then a heartbreaking final in the Thames cup between Leander and Tideway Scullers, with Scullers chasing all the way down the course to bring it down to a canvas on the line – two very good crews.
So after being inexplicably down by three lengths at the end of the island the four rated 37 down the rest of the course and managed to row through to win by three quarters of a length. So, good job but if anyone knows what happened at the start please let me know… UPDATE: First, [...]
